Ethnocentrism in Ethiopia and Africa Free Essay

The biggest problem in Ethiopia and Africa as a whole is ethnic ethnocentrism (tribalism). This one factor leads to more wars, thus more death and impoverishment, more than any other factor.

Ethiopia has been the subject of poverty, disease and corruption in the last 40+ years. As a result, this is a country that is heavily dependent on foreign aid, where proper use of internal resources cannot be achieved when a visionary leadership is yet to be created.
The US department of State claims that citizens are strongly advised to avoid travel near the Eritrean-Ethiopian border, as there have been military tensions in these areas. People are psychologically gearing up for war. An entire division of the Ethiopian Army has taken position in a nearby the Tigray region of Ethiopia, the Eritrean Army is waiting. Frequent attacks on innocent civilians are reported daily.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia is facing the threat of an Islamic terrorist group (Al-Shabab), who has been accused of terrorist bombings that is taking the lives of many Ethiopian citizens. As evidence in this, the United Nations has imposed actions on the extremist terrorist group. A country of over 80 ethnic groups, there is always hostility amongst each other.

Another example is the Oromo Liberation Front, a politically composed group which continues to bring havoc to Ethiopia (i.e., bombings, vandalizing, loitering) until they receive more government reputation. It is a country that is deeply divided into societies politically, socially, high level governance poorness, discriminative policy, and corrupt system which contributes to the weakness of the economy. The country lacks sufficient water and sanitation, leading to high risks of hepatitis A, hepatitis E, typhoid fever, malaria, rabies, meningococcal and a high rate of the Human Deficiency Virus (AIDS).

Ethiopia currently ranks 170 out of 177 of the poorest countries on the Human Development Index. Half of its GDP depends on agricultural activity. The agricultural sector suffers lowdown because of poor cultivation techniques and frequent drought. Often there are electricity shortages in the main cities; three nights a week there is no electricity.
