Essay on China as a Super Power

China has over the last several years begun a large program of military spending to upgrade their military technology to match or even over come Western Technology. Purchases of high tech weaponry systems and data have allowed them to begin a transit from a Brown water Navy to a Blue water navy which in the future could present a danger to the Asian Pacific Rim.

With a standing army of two million but with the ability to field over one-hundred-million soldiers, China possesses an even greater threat on land. Fortunately, they do not appear to have the naval ability as of today to project their forces long range.

This raises the question of who their threat to. China shares a border with the Russian Federation to its north, and is very able to pose a threat to the untapped natural resources in that region, as well as some of the former Republics of the Soviet Union. However, the technological curve between the United States and China shows that China would have to rely on speed more than time. They import a very large percentage of their natural resources and in a long term war this could cause their drive to halt.

The Chinese have one of the world’s largest Air Forces; however they do not have a very advanced one. Recent purchases of newer jet fighters might lift the threat they pose higher. However against any neighbor such as Taiwan or Japan they pose little threat in the air. The land forces of China are sixties-eighties era tanks and vehicles, while the United States continues to always keep a military superiority in all areas.

China’s navy could pose the largest threat if they continue to upgrade their Submarine force and a rumored Aircraft Carrier. With the addition of missile based subs, these subs could threaten long range. China’s Navy lacks amphibious assault vehicles which would allow landings in such countries as Taiwan.

We face a difficult future if China continues its plans to modernize and upgrade its military, since this is a country that has always posed a threat in Asia. No other nation in Asia can field such a threat as China can today.
