Why The US Became Involved in the Iraq War

Iraq at the time was the most dangerous regime in the Middle East in terms of promoting terrorism. It was a classic terrorist state. Saddam Hussein's government wreaked terror on its own citizens, as well as promoting terrorism in other countries. Besides that, Saddam invaded his neighbors a number of times.

After 9/11, the US became aware of the potential of terrorist attacks on US soil and decided to act proactively. After neutralizing Al Qaeda's power in Afghanistan, it decided to take out Saddam as leader of Iraq. This took about 3 weeks.

Basically, oil has replaced gold as the globally traded commodity so the west uses it's military power to gain control of "wealth" in the form of oil. If they can get it without paying the market rate for it, so much the better. Saddam nationalised the Iraqi oil and sold it in Euros thus undermining the US dollars. Libya was exactly the same. Libyan oil is already being sold by Qatar and, most probably, it is being sold in US dollars again instead of Euros.

But of course when you take out a country's government, it's not right to leave it in anarchy. You broke it, you replace it. So the US was obligated to re-stabilize Iraq with its new government. Saddam was out of power, but his people were still trying to get back in power. They were called the "Insurgency." If they got back into power, it would be like Saddam all over again.
