So, what do you order - a pizza, a burger, a sandwich? Does your head turn towards the hot chips or the salads? Fact is, most students choose unhealthy foods for their school lunch. This is why our schools should not serve unhealthy food. Schools should ban unhealthy foods because it goes against what they are telling kids to do, increasing obesity in the country. Here's the facts.

Obesity is a growing problem in this country. It's already affected over twenty percent of the population. That is double the amount from 1980, and tripled for teens. It's causing more and more medical problems. Obesity causes diabetes, cancers, strokes, and many other health problems. An easy and great way to start changing this is by starting in school. Schools can help this issue easily by replacing foods that are high in fat and sugar with healthier options. Schools won't be losing out on it either, because studies show schools can offer healthier options in vending machines without "losing revenue". 

Schools serving unhealthy foods are going against what they are saying themselves. Kids go to health class and learn about what foods are unhealthy and how to make better choices. But, the school doesn't support much of what they are teaching. U.S. schools should be offering more healthier foods and cutting down on the variety of unhealthy food. If schools did not mainly offer unhealthy choices, kids would be taking the healthier choices. 

Standing in the lunchline, you can see your options. Most of the time, there is pizza, burgers, hot dogs, canned fruit, chips, and a few others. There are also salads, apple sauce or green beans, but kids usually don't take any of those. Also, kids who bring their own lunches usually have a sandwich, a drink, and lots of processed snacks. Most of the time, kids only eat half their sandwich and go straight for the snacks. Many American schools should enforce and persuade kids to make healthier choices.

In conclusion, schools in the U.S. should start to serve healthier food options. It would help kids by reducing chance of health problems, enforcing their own rules, and knowing what kids are eating. Healthy food makes for healthy students!

Harm of TV Shows Free Essay

Little benefit is derived from watching reality T.V. shows. Some people may consider these shows entertaining but they are actually very harmful to a person’s physical and mental well-being.

The reality show “The Biggest Loser” presents everyday overweight people trying to lose weight. People watch the show to be entertained or in most cases—to learn how to lose weight. However, sitting in front of the T.V. is a lot different than getting up to exercise like the reality “stars”. Most Americans sit on their couch eating nachos while watching overweight people exercise across the screen. The reality show sucks people into a world that does not exist. It just makes people less of what they want to be—fat and unhealthy. 

Besides causing weight-gain, watching reality T.V. shows can harm people physically in terms of eyesight, while gaining weight, people lose their vision, partly because weight-gain contributes to this harmful side effect, and mostly because sitting a few feet in front of a bight screen for hours a week is a leading cause in vision-loss. Watching MTV’s “Real World: Life as a Blind Person” will not help people or their vision in any way; it will only cause more harm.

Mental harm is also caused by reality shows. For instance, a person who spends copious hours watching “American Idol” will never get the hour spent back to use for something useful as practicing their singing. If that person’s dream is to become a renowned singer, they must practice singing and take the required steps into making a studio album. Watching other people’s dreams come true will only cause physiological harm. That aspiring singer will be let down by all the successes on the show which may or may not be real, and never pursue their dream. For that person, it may seem impossible to reach their dreams because they have never even tried singing in front of anyone but their T.V. As a result, that person may become depresses, turn to illegal substances, and commit suicide. Al of this could happen just by watching petty reality T.V. shows.

The percentage of people who take action due to reality shows is minuscule. Likewise, the “entertaining” reality shows cause more harm than benefits.

It was 4 AM in the morning, and my parents were away for vacation. I had no siblings, so they just left me home alone. My parents had left me a list of chores for me to do before they come back, which I haven’t even bothered starting. I slept in the attic, and as I was getting ready for bed, I heard a long creaking noise coming from the stairs. I went downstairs to investigate, but there was nothing unusual. I decided I was just hearing things, but just as I was about to go back up, I heard a door slamming behind me. I spun around, but there wasn't anyone.

I was starting to get frightened and I could feel my palms sweating and my heart pounding hard on my chest. Suddenly a long moaning voice broke through the eerie silence. "Kathyyy...Kathyyyyy"it wailed. I froze. I was paralyzed with fear. I started to feel faint and I couldn't think properly. Who on earth was this, and how did they know my name? What do they want from me? Slowly, I regained my consciousness and without thinking, I dashed up the stairs into the attic as fast as my legs would take me. I was just about to dive right into my bed when I noticed that the blankets were torn up into shreds.

Suddenly, a gust of wind blew, and my bedroom windows shut with a loud noise. As I stepped back slowly, I noticed something else. My initials were written on the wall with smudged up blood. I couldn’t take this sight any longer. I ran over to my door and tried to get out, but the door was locked! I grasped the doorknob tightly and tried to turn it, but it wouldn't budge! Suddenly, a loud, high pitched cackle came behind me. "Hahahahaha! You'll never get out, you foolish girl!" it shrieked. I whirled around and came face to face to...myself?!

I saw an exact duplicate of myself, except much paler, and soaked with blood. I clutched onto the doorknob to stop myself from falling, and the same sort of faint feeling I had earlier returned to me, except it was much, much worse. Finally, I couldn't hold on any longer, and I fell on to the floor. The last thing I remember before blacking out was seeing the girl reaching over to my face with her bloody hands and smiling wanly.

Heroes Now and Then Free Essay

In the past it seems the hero that uses his intellect to solve the lands problem was more common than it is now. Even the strongest greek heroes often used wit. In the first Greek myth Rhea helps her son Zeus defeat his father, her husband through planning and trickery.

There are many archetypes this kind of hero can fit into including Orphan, Seeker, Creator, Ruler, and Sage. This hero type is most likely succesful because they are able to hone their skills to fit almost any situation. They are able to reason, justify, discover and outwit. 

Now a more common hero is centered around the hero archetype. We send our warriors, soldiers, to defeat possible threats and procure resources. Our defenders, police officers, focus more on stopping crime than avoiding it all together. We put more funding into capturing and punishing our criminals than into preventing their development. 

Today in our movies we admire the hero who shoots or slashes his way to victory. Even in “The Book of Eli” a man must strike down his enemies in order to protect The Bible a book that preaches co-existence and gives us guidelines on how to live peacefully. This archetype of a warrior who destroys the danger surrounds us. Young people admire fictional characters that are strong, tough, and violent. There isn't anything wrong with movies that have a physically gifted person as the hero. In fact many people love superhero movies which are often violent for the greater good. Violence simply isn't the ideal. Movies are for the most part used for entertainment. I certainly don't believe we should do away with violent movies, I believe we need an equally strong presence of clever heroes.

In our U.S. Culture the intellectual is seen as a weak person. Boys are encouraged to be strong and physically fit. Strength is a good and useful trait to have but smart people are much more versatile and applicable.

We could learn from the great heroes of the past that we can succeed by brain power. We need to use ideas to solve our problems, even ones we have presented to ourselves such as global warming and economic trouble. As Edward Bulwer-Lytton said “The pen is mightier than the sword.” I take this to mean that a person can use words and ideas to conquer any threats.

Biologists have argued that with the discovery of DNA and in examining the genetic code, they have inherited the ability so far as to be able to determine the form and function of organisms and can use this to create their own. They claim techniques and technologies are improving all the time and it is increasingly possible to insert genes at a precise place in the host. Gene splicing, a large cause in this case, involves injecting genetics into a life source, such as an embryo, which carry premeditated genes that cannot be controlled in number or if they will produce accurately.

Many biologists have argued that mankind has interfered with evolution with breeding and habitat managment for as long as they have inhabited the earth, but genetic engineering differs due to the simple fact that it crosses a "species barrier"; In other words, crosses which would have never happened in the real world. Genetic engineering is much different because scrambling genomes will lead to the total destruction of evolution. While some might contradict this predicament because of their belief in the bible, there is still an issue to be held; If God created all mankind and life on Earth, then man should be limited if not withheld from tampering with the power of an almighty God and create life, just as it is stated in the bible, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." (Genesis 1:26) Philosophy dictates that God has put the ideas into our minds. Thus biologists believe they have a stance to argue that they are justified to use the technology of genetic engineering. However, by creating life with these modifications, no matter how insignificant they may seem, we are going against God's will, and indeed, breaking the rules of life and death.

Genetically engineered seeds are available for plantation in the agricultural industry, as well. Their purpose is to manipulate the chances of a disease to be spread or carried to other organisms from slim to none. These crops also have Bacillus thuringienis (Bt)-toxin genes on them. Helpful organisms such as ladybirds, bees, and butterflies are killed with this material.. Also if any Bt plant remains fall back to Earth, earthworms and other organisms who live in the soil are threatened. Furthermore, the build up of Bt toxin resistance threatens to stop the effectiveness of insesticides and this deprives the natural ecosystem of one of its pest controls, thus making the restoration of equilibrium difficult after the ecosystem has been disturbed by an abnormality.

Genetic engineering is now a global part of industrialization. It is also particular in the market-powered economy which sees life as a mere advantage. Corporate espionage is a form of espionage conducted for commercial purposes instead of purely national security purposes. For instance, the chief programmer of Jurassic Park's controlling software, Dennis Nedry, attempts corporate espionage for Lewis Dodgson, a geneticist and agent of InGen's infamous competitor, Biosyn. By deactivating a back door when he hacked into the system, Nedry manages to swiftly steal 15 frozen embryos from the laboratories without being detected by the security systems. If genetic engineering is to become another particular gateway to scamming and other negative financial influences, then economically, for the better of mankind, it should be disallowed. People would take the cause irresponsibly, spending money to create their very own designer babies, spending to cure every illness known, widespread crop failure, canceling out survival of the fittest and causing overpopulation, and the destruction continues, hereon.

Gay Marriage Should be Legal Free Essay

Gay marriage should be legal. Gay marriage has been illegal since the 20th century because before that gays were frowned upon and had to be married to someone of the opposite gender.

"Thou shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination". "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lithe with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them" (A passage from the bible). Look that is just horrible. I don’t think a man should be put to death just for loving another man. I don’t have a problem with Christians and the bible but that is just a horrible thing to teach children and adults. The bible teaches some good things but also teaches a lot of bad things like Hatred and sexist things. 

If Christians believe that god made everyone that means god made gays. When they deny that being gay is a choice it means that god gave them a choice to be gay. It really doesn’t make any sense to me. I have had people talk to me about this before they said that “Everyone has a weakness and being gay is a weakness” He then told me his weakness is that he is lazy and he has to overcome his laziness but he won’t go to hell for being lazy but people will go to hell for being gay. 

First off, I don’t believe in hell, and the fact that gays are supposed to go to hell is by far the worst thing I have heard. Hell is for people that kill, rape, sin, and other bad things. Not for a person that is gay. So what if he/she is gay why does it matter to you? You should just worry about your own life and stop trying to control other people’s lives.

The definition of marriage on the dictionary is ”The state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law”. Now give me one good reason why gay marriage should be illegal. There is no good answer because it should be legal. Gays are just normal people like you and me. They pay taxes, have families, like to play sports, and maybe even join the army as all normal people do.
